*sings in Little Rascals voice* I got a burger! I got a burger!! I got a
burger hey hey hey!!!
As you read below, PC Rwanda took all of
the volunteers to Kigali, and allowed us to have some free time in the city!
Woot woot!! The only two things I could think about all week were hamburgers
and Oreo's! I don't like the way the
meat is prepared here in Rwanda and so I haven't been eating it. I hadn't had a good taste of any animal in 3+
weeks and I could not wait to get my hands on a thick, greasy, fatty burger and
fries! And for some reason, I have been
craving Oreo cookies something terrible.
I didn't end up finding any of those, but let me tell you, that burger
was BEYOND delicious!
It came complete with lettuce, pickle, onion, tomato, mayo, and ketchup. The fries weren't the greatest, but the fresh
pineapple juice I had for my beverage more than made up for the terrible
fries. It almost tasted like a pineapple
smoothie...so thick and creamy and yummy and fresh. My mouth is watering just thinking about
it! After the hamburgers, me and the
volunteers I was hanging with went on a very unsuccessful hunt for Oreo cookies
and ice cream. We didn't find either
one, but we did find a Nakumat Supermarket (the Rwandan equivalent of an
over-priced Wal-mart) and we bought all types of things...from chocolate bread
(you know that was me) to toilet paper and fingernail polish. The only thing I ended up buying was the
chocolate bread because we had ran into my sorority sister who also happens to
be a PC Rwanda Volunteer and she told me that everything I saw in this
supermarket could be found in the outdoor market for much cheaper. So I took her advice and decided to just
indulged in my guilty pleasure; that bread was my splurge for the weekend...it
was 650 FRW! That may not amount up to
much in the US (just ~$1.10), but 650 FRW is A LOT in Rwanda...especially on
this tight Peace Corps budget!
I'll end with this, if my permanent site
is anywhere near Kigali, I will definitely be treating myself to some fine
American cuisine at least once a
month! That steep 3,600 FRW for a burger, fries, and a pineapple drink was
soooo very much worth it!
Love and Peace Corps,

This is funny, yet a little sad cause who would think any of us would be craving greasy hamburgers lol. But that's when you pull out your little receipt book honey lol. But no I know it is hard not having meat. Maybe as a special treat I can send you a piece of America in the form of 650 FRW! So you can eat like an American (:
ReplyDeleteYour 650FRW would be much appreciated :) ...that's only like $1.10 for you so I'm sure you wont miss it much
